Cross-Stitching

 Weight

  • The way the sun bears down, on a humid day
  • A fig tree, laden to the ground         with fruit
  • To learn a piece of heavy news             And carry it

Stretch

  • To ask “how much do you love me?”             “Thiiiis much!”
  • The slow and silent motion of a full womb, making just a little bit of room    for more
  • To stop, for just another – few moments – for a friend,     for conversation

Pain

  • A thorn: blood drawn from picking in the berry bushes
  • To hear a child cry out, when you can’t reach her
  • The sound of woven fabric

         torn

         asunder

Joy

  • The way my fathers arms feel safe when I cry in them
  • Tracing the stretch marks on a laden heart
  • And knowing it’s worth it
